Blockchain security firm Blockaid releases its 2026 threat landscape report on fund recovery.
Blockchain security firm Blockaid has released its "2026 Fund Recovery Threat Landscape Report," tracking 60 major on-chain attack incidents that occurred between January 5 and August 5, 2026, involving approximately $1.18 billion in stolen assets. As of September 2, only $9.8 million had been returned to victims, while another $81.4 million had been frozen but not yet returned. The report shows that the median time for attackers to begin moving assets after stealing funds was only 17 minutes; 22% of incidents saw fund transfers within the first minute, and 68% within the first hour. Of the 60 incidents, only 5 succeeded in recovering or freezing part of the funds, totaling $91.2 million, of which about 99% was achieved through protocol- or blockchain-level control mechanisms. Address freezing by stablecoin issuers and compliance freezing by centralized exchanges produced no actual recovery results. In addition, about $287 million in stolen funds remains in known hacker addresses but cannot be directly frozen because they are held in assets such as ETH and BTC that lack issuer-level freezing mechanisms. Another approximately $97.2 million could theoretically be frozen, yet no relevant measures have been taken.
