South Korean police arrested seven suspects on suspicion of AI-assisted hacking.
Seoul police arrested seven suspects accused of using generative AI to carry out hacking attacks targeting about 90 organizations and stealing 8.2 million records, according to Bithumb News. This is South Korea's first arrest of suspects in a large-scale AI-assisted hacking operation. Police said the victims included hospitals, universities, private cram schools, golf courses and subsidiaries of large corporations, with one funeral service provider losing 1.22 million records. Among the suspects, a 32-year-old main culprit claimed to have taught himself hacking through YouTube and online blogs, and police said he had worked on simulated attacks at a security company between 2019 and 2022. The hacker breached 60 companies in 44 days, and police said that in the past an attack of this scale would typically require a team of hackers, whereas AI now allows a single person to complete it in a short period of time.
