Ledger wallet hit by $860,000 hack, security alert raises questions

CoinWorld data: Questions are being raised over whether Ledger wallets received tampering alerts before the $86 million hack. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès said the manufacturer knew about suspicious devices months before the October incident. Security researcher Joe Grand discovered a tampered Ledger Nano X wallet in March 2026. Investigations show that devices distributed to Southeast Asia had unauthorized hardware modifications, with initial reported losses exceeding $86 million and later estimates surpassing $103 million. Ledger wallets have suspended sales through regional distributors, and the investigation is still ongoing. Karpelès noted that the manufacturer began receiving reports about tampered hardware wallets in December 2025, but no public warning from Ledger was seen. On-chain researchers reported that attackers stole more than $103.4 million from 530 crypto addresses.
